Francesca Giglio Named Player of the Year
1/24/14 - 10:12 AM

Francesca Giglio

Congrats to Francesca Giglio on being named player of the year. The Royals also represented Queens with three more players on the first team selection with senior defender Destiny Marino, and sophomores Sarah Nolan and Medina Mulic.

Here's the article: The Royals had many cogs in their success, but the senior center midfielder was the one who really made things happen. Giglio, who scored twice, did the dirty work at the center of the pitch to give Christ the King control of play. She was the one dishing to scorers Medina Mulic and Sarah Nolan. Her perfect through balls turned into 14 assists, including on the lone goal of CK’s diocesan final victory.

Joining teammate Mulic as the only two players to repeat as All-City first team selections, the speedy Nolan backed up a fabulous freshman year with a sensational sophomore campaign. Royals score crown over TMLA team (Timesledger Article)
11/12/13 - 05:02 PM

Christ the King celebrates its third straight CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens Division I girls' soccer title.

Christ the King’s Sarah Nolan was in a deep goal-scoring slump as the regular season came to a close.

The sophomore forward was creating chance after chance, but was struggling to finish for various reasons and it bothered her. She was too reliant on using her right foot and often over-thought a shot before taking it. Nolan and Royals Coach John Fayad used the time created thanks to a bye into the diocesan final to make sure Nolan righted things before the playoffs.

“We worked on the left foot until she couldn’t shoot anymore,” Fayad said.

It appears she got it down.

Nolan used her left foot to score the only goal Christ the King needed for a 1-0 win over Mary Louis to earn the school’s third straight CHSAA Brooklyn-Queens Division I girls’ soccer title last Saturday at Aviator Sports Complex. The Royals, who topped TMLA for all three crowns, advance to the Catholic state semifinals Nov. 9 to face Rockville Center winner St. John the Baptist back at Aviator.

A defensive mistake by the Hilltoppers gave CK, also the regular season champion, the break it needed after a scoreless first half. Senior midfielder Francesca Giglio was able to control the ball and send a perfect pass to a running Nolan up the left side. Nolan took a few steps and softy touched the ball into the net to give CK a 1-0 lead in the 43rd minute.

“I was thinking, ‘I can’t believe we haven’t scored yet,’” she said. “When we finally got that goal I was like, ‘We are finally going to win this.’”

The Royals (7-1-2) may have won by a larger margin if not for the efforts of Mary Louis goalkeeper Claire Loredan. The senior made numerous diving saves in the second half to keep Christ the King from extending its advantage. She denied Nolan, Medina Mulic and Andrea Cardozo during the final 15 minutes.

“Last year she was doing the same things,” TMLA Coach Tom Bruen said. “She always gives them a chance.”

The coach would have liked to see his Hilltoppers team (7-4-2) be more aggressive earlier on offense. Star midfielder Therese Boyle ripped a 20-yard strike that went wide in the 67th minute and her shot across the box just missed the lower left corner in the 73rd minute.

“Urgency is sometimes hard to come by,” Bruen said.

Giglio said there is always an urgency to keep the Royals’ string of titles going after the program had never won prior to this run. She believes that feeling will remain even with she and senior Destiny Marino leaving after three crowns.

“I felt like every year we are like, ‘Now we can’t lose this one,’” Giglio said. “So I have a feeling next year they are going to be like, ‘They’re gone and we still can’t lose.’”

Three-Peat for the CK Varsity Girls
11/4/13 - 07:32 AM

B/Q 2013 Champions

The Christ the King Royals girls soccer team won its third consecutive Brooklyn/Queens AA Division title after beating Mary Louis Academy by a score of 1-0 at Aviator Field in Brooklyn on a Saturday afternoon on November 2nd. The game was a very competitive one and both teams took turns on controlling the middle of the field until the 22nd minute of the game when the royals team led by senior midfielder Francesca Giglio and Junior Stephanie Zdazenski took over the game and maintained order at the midfield third of the field. CK created multiple chances in the first half and was close to scoring Andrea Cardozo's half volley sailed slightly over the upright. Giglio, Medina Mulic and Sarah Nolan had a chance each to end the first half and were successfully stopped by the TMLA keeper. The second half saw more of the same with continued pressure from CK that eventually led to a few shots from Mulic and Nolan on goal. Mulic's shots continued and kept the TMLA defense on their toes. Giglio eventually found a streaking Nolan inside the box, who in turn calmly placed the ball in the TMLA net scoring the game winner. The rest of the game was a battle and did not materialize further for any of the two teams. The CK defense led by Senior Destiny Marino and Sophomore Diana Paravatos was able to neutralize any TMLA attack.

Congratulations to The Christ the King Royals on winning their third consecutive AA Division Championship for Brooklyn/Queens and the third ever since the start of the league three years ago.

The Royals play on Wednesday November 6th at 4:15 at Aviator Field in Brooklyn against Kennedy Catholic from Westchester for the CIty Title.

The State Semifinal will be between CK and St. John the Baptist on Saturday November 9th at 2:00. Come support our team!

Royals take aim at third straight diocesan soccer title
9/13/13 - 08:30 AM

Francesca Giglio (l.-r.), Sarah Nolan, Medina Mulic and Destiny Marino hope to lead Christ the King to a third straight diocesan title

Christ the King’s Medina Mulic quickly went from unknown to being touted as one of the best all-around female soccer players in New York City as a freshman last season.

The now-sophomore midfielder is not only just a year older, but stronger, faster and more confident after a summer of working with Christ the King trainer Anton Turkovic. Mulic, the reigning TimesLedger Newspapers All-Queens player of the year, said she felt a difference right away and believes the extra work is going to show in her play this season.

“I think I’m more aggressive and I don’t have the best stamina, but I have more stamina,” she said.

Mulic and her 22 goals and 15 assists from a year ago will be the centerpiece of a talent returning offensive group for two-time defending CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens champion Christ the King. CK also brings back senior captain and midfielder Francesca Giglio (11 goals, 19 assists) and sophomore forward Sarah Nolan (18 goals, nine assists). It adds to them midfielders Paulina Ambrus and Andrea Cardozo. The unit’s chemistry came back quickly.

“It is easier,” Giglio said. “You just know when Sarah is going to open up to one side or when Medina is going to open up. It does help that we do know how they play.”

The Royals and Coach John Fayad will rely heavily on that group early in the season as a fresh-faced defense jells together after a number of departures. All-City level keeper Kristen Drogsler chose to concentrate on basketball, sweeper Cathy Lume left the team for personal reasons and defender Vanessa Jordan transferred to Flushing.

“I’m stacking up the middle,” Fayad said. “We aim to posses the ball as much as possible to relieve the defense.”

That doesn’t mean he lacks trust in the defenders. Veteran fullback Destiny Marino returns and will be looked to for leadership in the early going. Fayad is excited about the progress of new sophomore sweeper Diana Paravatos and freshman goalie Kimberly Moreira. Moreira has caught the eye of her teammates right away.

“She doesn’t let much get past her,” Marino said. “I feel like we trust her just as much as we trusted Kristen.”

They will need to if it is going to repeat as champs and reach the school’s first CHSAA state final. Last season’s defeat to Notre Dame Academy in semifinals, the only loss of the year, still sticks with the players. Fayad said the pressure is no different than what they faced before.

“I set the bar high and it’s up to them to get us there,” Fayad said. “I know all the teams are going to be gunning for us.”
