CK’s Mulic best in Queens
1/17/13 - 07:08 AM

Medina Mulic, of Christ the King, was chosen as Queens' best player by TimesLedger Newspapers.

Congrats to Medina Mulic, Kristen Drogsler, Cathy Lume, and Sarah Nolan on being selected to the All Queens 2012 Soccer Team.

The Queens girls’ soccer teams remained among the city’s elite.

Christ the King won its second straight CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens Class AA title and St. John’s Prep reached the Class A final. Over in the PSAL, Bayside and Cardozo reached the Class A quarterfinals. Queens also featured one of the city’s top seniors in Bayside’s D.J. Glazer, who is headed to Marist.

All-Queens girls’ soccer player of the year: Medina Mulic, Christ the King

There haven’t been many freshmen that had the immediate impact Mulic did. She thrived at the center midfield spot. Mulic played well beyond her years. Her speed and creativity with the ball helped her make those around her better en route to a diocesan title. She has 22 goals and 15 assists.

All-Queens girls’ soccer coach of the year: John Fayad, Christ the King

Fayad showed he has truly built an elite program at CK. The Royals replaced its top senior with skilled freshman and may have been better than a year ago. Fayad guided his squad to an unbeaten regular season and a second straight CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens Class AA title.

All-Queens Girls’ Soccer First Team

F Terese Boyle, Mary Louis

The junior didn’t always have scoring help around her, but still led the Hilltoppers back to the CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens ‘AA’ final. There aren’t many players with better instincts and skill with the ball.

GK Sam Cobotic, St. Francis Prep

The sophomore is one of the city’s top up-and-coming keepers. The Terriers’ defensive style forced her to see a lot of shots and she held up spectacularly at times. Cobotic had 13 saves in a scoreless tie with St. John the Baptist.

D Caroline DeBonis, Francis Lewis

The Patriots lost plenty of seniors, but the sophomore gives them a bright future. She stepped right in at sweeper for the graduated Valerie James and helped Lewis earn a share of the division title. DeBonis’ speed and heart are a special combination.

GK Kristen Drogsler, Christ the King

The ultra-athletic Drogsler may not have seen as many shots as she did a year ago, but the junior was still sensational when called upon. She also orchestrated the Royals’ stingy defense from the net moving teammates where they needed to be.

M Brittany Ehrlich, Cardozo

Cardozo wasn’t an offensive juggernaut, but Ehrlich usually had a major hand in it when they did score. The sophomore tallied a team-leading 18 goals and also dished out nine assists to help her team reach the quarterfinals.

F D. J. Glazer, Bayside

The Marist-bound forward picked up right where she left off last year and even added a bigger leadership role. Glazer tallied a PSAL-leading 44 goals and also had eight assists. She answered the bell when asked to do more than score.

D Aimée Kasmally, St. Francis Prep

The senior is one of the city’s best sweepers. She helped lead the Terriers and their stingy defense to one of their best seasons in CHSAA Nassau/Suffolk in recent years. Her strength and smarts make her a nightmare for opposing forwards.

M Lina Dominguez, Forest Hills

Dominguez has been a rock at midfield for Forest Hills and Coach Bob Spance over the years. Her leadership helped the Rangers win an elusive division title. She scored just three times, but had 13 assists and helped control play at midfield.

D Cathy Lume, Christ the King

The junior sweeper has been an unsung hero for the Royals the last two seasons. Lume again was the leader of one of the city’s best defenses. Her veteran presence helped CK claim a second straight diocesan crown.

F Sarah Nolan, Christ the King

Nolan stepped right in for the graduated Christina Viaggio. The speed freshman netted 18 goals and dished out nine assists. She had consecutive hat tricks against Mary Louis and St. Joseph by the Sea.

M Rachel Spampinato, Mary Louis

The junior often provided the scoring help Boyle needed. Her veteran presence at midfield was invaluable to a Mary Louis team that had new faces in bigger roles. Spampinato was a big reason TMLA reached another diocesan final.

All-Queens Honorable Mention

M Victoria Antonino, Molloy

D Kelly Bouzi, Cardozo

D Gina Baglieri, St. Francis Prep

A Jackelin Brito, Forest Hills

F Geraldine Huisa, Long Island City

F Jessie Jamin, Archbishop Molloy

GK Vanessa Jimenz, Bayside

GK Claire Loredan, Mary Louis

F Olivia McFadden, Townsend Harris

GK Ashley Rivera, St. John’s Prep

M Nataly Rojas, Francis Lewis

Drogsler, Lume, Nolan, and Mulic are 1st Team All City Soccer
12/5/12 - 09:16 PM

Goalie Kristen Drogsler

2012 All-New York City girls soccer team

FIRST TEAM

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

SARAH ROSE BARONE STERN
Notre Dame Academy, Sr. Midfielder

The senior midfielder was the most consistent scoring threat for the Gators by generating 13 goals and 7 assists, but it was her unselfishness in drawing the attention of the defenders that help the Gators win the Archdiocesan championship over St. Joseph Hill and advance to the CHSAA state title game for the first time ever.

KRISTEN DROGSLER
Christ the King, Sr. Goalkeeper

The three-year starter made plenty of big saves in the last few years for the Lady Royals. Drogsler made an impact in close games by shutting out Mary Louis twice and saving 13 shots in Christ the King’s 3-2 win over highly-ranked St. Joseph Hill in the regular season.

ELIZABETH SCHAEFER
Bronx Science, Sr. Defender

The Wolverines senior effectively handled the job of guarding the opposition’s best scoring threat. Her four-year varsity experience was needed to help a team get through midseason injuries and the co-captain was able to hoist the PSAL Class A championship for the second time in her career.

CATHY LUME
Christ the King, Jr. Defender

The junior sweeper may not have been the tallest player at 5-foot-3, but Lume showcased quickness and smarts to help the Royals win a second consecutive CHSAA Brooklyn-Queens championship.

CARLY AMON
Horace Mann, Sr. Defense

The Lions defender shook off the effects off a neck injury and was a stabilizing presence in the Lions backline. Amon helped Horace Mann shutout No. 2 seed Hackley in the semifinals and Columbia Prep in the NYSAISAA championship game.

MEDINA MULIC
Christ the King, Fr. Midfielder

Medina emerged as one of the top central midfielders in the city in her freshman campaign. The 5-foot-8 Mulic was not only a good passer, but she was a force with her right foot in leading the team with 22 goals.

SARAH HEINTZ
Horace Mann, Sr. Midfielder

The senior was a mainstay in central midfield and became an influential player during the playoffs for the sixth-seeded Lions. Heintz scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Columbia Prep and delivered her school a first-ever NYSAISAA girls soccer title.

TYLER SLOAN
Beacon, Sr. Midfielder

The four-year varsity player helped guide a high scoring Beacon offense to the PSAL Class A finals. Sloan had a career-high 13 goals and seven assists and was an anchor in the center of midfield for a young Blue Demons squad.

ZOE CLARK
Riverdale, Sr. Midfielder

The University of California-bound midfielder was influential to her team after recovering from a concussion suffered in the preseason. Her ability to pass the ball and make runs at opposing defenses helped the Falcons clinch a school-record third straight Ivy League regular season crown.

DJ GLAZER
Bayside, Sr. Forward

Glazer will play at Marist College as a defender, but it was her deft goal scoring touch that made the difference for the Lady Commodores. She had 40 goals and had eight assists to lead Bayside to the PSAL Class A quarterfinals.

SARAH NOLAN
Christ the King, Fr. Forward

The 5-foot-2 forward showed a burst of speed and a goal scoring touch to record a fine first season with 18 goals and seven assists. Nolan netted a hat trick in a 3-0 win over Mary Louis to guide the Lady Royals to the Brooklyn/Queens CHSAA regular season title.

Royal repeat: CK wins second BQ soccer title
11/13/12 - 08:00 AM

The 2012 AA Brooklyn/Queens Champions CK Royals

Highlights: http://www.msgvarsity.com/highlights-ctk-2-mary-louis-0-11-13-12-1.1256587

A year after winning its first-ever CHSAA Class AA Brooklyn/Queens championship, Christ the King made it two in a row Monday afternoon, again beating The Mary Louis Academy, 2-0, in the final at Aviator Sports Complex.

If last year’s championship proved Christ the King arrived on the New York City girls soccer landscape, Monday’s second straight crown proved the Royals aren’t leaving that landscape anytime soon.

“Coach said it usually takes eight years to build a soccer program and he’s done it in four,” junior sweeper Cathy Lume said. “Now it shows we weren’t lucky last year.”

The Royals weren’t very lucky in the first half Monday, in part because The Mary Louis Academy goalkeeper Clare Loredan was so good. The junior was spectacular, twice coming off her line to stop Stephanie Rivera in a two-minute span and then robbing Sarah Nolan on a shot from 16 yards out seconds before halftime.

“She stepped up this year and actually became a premier goalie,” Mary Louis coach Tom Bruen said. “She’s really a talented kid. I can’t say enough about her.”

The score was level at halftime, but Bruen was concerned as he spoke to his team during the break. He knows from experience how strong the Royals start in the second half of games. It’s happened against Mary Louis twice during the regular season and again in a game against St. Joseph Hill, a game Bruen watched.

“You could see on their faces when they come out [for the second half], they’re coming out to win,” he said. “They’ve got that attitude.”

Inside the Christ the King team talk, Fayad pleaded for patience, telling his squad a goal was coming.

He was right, and it came just three minutes into the second half as freshman Medina Mulic flicked in Francesca Giglio’s free kick to put Christ the King (16-0-0), ranked No. 2 in New York City by MSG Varsity, in front, 1-0.

“The games that we won and won comfortably were the ones that we scores early,” Fayad said. “At halftime we spoke about that, that the goal was coming, just be patient. I didn’t expect it to come from a free kick, but I’ll take it.”

Mulic said she didn’t make eye contact with Giglio as she struck her free kick and she didn’t have her eyes open when she headed the ball into the net.

“I just made a good run,” Mulic said. “I didn’t make any eye contact because then the goalie would have known where I went.”

The goal deflated No. 7 Mary Louis (9-4-1) and allowed the Royals to play with less pressure. The result was a second goal by another freshman, this by Nolan, who got behind the defense and scored from 10 yards out in the 52nd minute.

One minute later, the Hilltoppers threatened to pull within a goal when star Therese Boyle finally found space behind the Royals defense, but Kristen Drogsler made the big save.

While he knows why his freshman forwards have received much of the praise this year, Fayad said his poised midfield and backline that has conceded six goals all season, has been solid, as well.

It’s a big reason why Christ the King has put together back-to-back championship seasons. Fayad said he became introspective with five minutes remaining.

“That tells me and tells the girls that this is a good program,” Fayad said. “As you could see we do have a lot of talent, but we lost players and we’re still doing what we do. That tells you the program is doing well.”

Christ the King faces Notre Dame Academy in a CHSAA Class AA state semifinal back at Aviator Thursday at 4:30 p.m. The winner heads to the final this weekend in Buffalo.

Nolan Does it Again
10/18/12 - 07:59 AM

Sarah Nolan scores CK's first goal

The Christ the King girls soccer team is up to an incredible 13-0-0 season thanks to a collective great effort from all players on defense, midfield and offense. The team played a very balanced game and the players were able to hold possession of the ball for most of the game. Sarah Nolan stole the show when she scored all three goals of the game assisted by Medina Mulic all three times. This is Nolan's second straight hat trick again two tough opponents in St. Joe's by the Sea and Mary Louis Academy. Defensively, Kristen Drogsler had five saves and was instrumental in creating counter attacks all the way from her goal. Destiny Marino and Cathy Lume led a stingy CK defense who only gave up 7 goals in 13 games this season. The CK midfielders did all the hard work and were able to move the ball effectively control the tempo of the game. With this win CK clinches its second AA division win in as many seasons.

Preseason girls soccer: No. 8 Christ the King
8/30/12 - 09:46 PM

Francesca Giglio (l. to r.), Stephanie Rivera, Kristen Drogsler and Cathy Lume are excited about attempting to repeat as Brooklyn/Queens champions.

by Dylan Butler on Thu, Aug 30, 2012 at 12:20 AM

Last November, Christ the King captured its first-ever Brooklyn/Queens Diocesan title, beating rival Mary Louis in a thrilling final.

It was a dream season and the returning Royals want nothing more than to replicate that this year.

“We always talk about how excited we were,” junior sweeper Cathy Lume said. “We want to get back to that.”

Lume is one of five starters back from a club that will go into the Christ the King athletics history. From the first day of preseason at Brennan Field, it was clear this year’s group wasn’t resting on last year’s laurels.

“These girls expect nothing but to win,” coach John Fayad said. “Losses are not part of their vocabulary. I expect a lot out of them and they expect a lot out of each other.”

Added goalkeeper Kristen Drogsler: “It just raises the bar and we just have to play above it again.”

It won’t be easy to replace last year’s seniors, especially the attacking duo of Fabiana Rebecca (Pace) and Christina Viaggio (New York Tech), who are both now playing Division II soccer.

Viaggio struck for 23 goals -- including a remarkable 16 in the first six games -- and added 10 assists, including a pair in the final. She was named to the All-City second team by MSG Varsity.

Rebecca was slowed by an early knee injury, but the speedy forward finished with 16 goals, none bigger than the equalizer moments after Mary Louis took the lead in the B/Q final. She also had eight assists on the season.

Fayad isn’t sure who will pick up the scoring this season, but he is excited about having a stout defense, led by Drogsler, who enters her third year as the Royals starting goalkeeper and was named All-City second team by MSG Varsity last fall.

“She was amazing last year and she will continue to improve,” he said. “She is going to be a top-notch goalie.”

In front of Drogsler will be Lume, a returning starting sweeper, and Destiny Marino is another key defender.

“She’s in great shape and she’s a shutdown defender. Our defense is going to be very solid this year,” Fayad said. “You build around what you have and what I have is an outstanding goalie and outstanding defense.”

Francesca Giglio returns in the center of midfield and she’s joined by senior Stephanie Rivera, who plays on the outside right.

“She’s phenomenal with the ball, has a good shot,” Fayad said. “She has a very high soccer IQ.”

Giglio said last year’s squad worked hard to put Christ the King girls soccer on the map and this year’s team is anxious to prove it wasn’t a fluke.

“It’s like we made a name for each other and now we have to keep it up,” she said. “I don’t want people to think that we got lucky last year. We busted our butts.”

Indeed, the Royals will likely go from hunter to hunted this fall. That’s the reward for being the defending champions.

“We lost a lot of good players so it’s going to be harder this year,” Rivera said. “But we’re willing to do it and try our best to achieve it.”
