NYC 2011 Boys Soccer Rankings 11/15/11 - 11:48 AM
Sophmore Chris Nolasco
The New York Post ranked the boys soccer at Christ the King as the #6 in the New York City and #4 in the New York CHSAA?Private schools.
6 NYC City Ranking: Christ the King (9-6-3) (6)
The youngest team on this list is going to be a real problem next year. With Calogero Curcuru, Federico Curbelo, Cesar Oviedo and a host of impact players returning, the CHSAA Class AA semifinals might be in the cards for King yet again.
4 CHSAA/Private Ranking: Christ the King (9-6-3) (4)
Peyton Atteloney, the team’s star, and John Favara, its best defender will graduate, but there wasn’t a younger team in the CHSAA this year. Calogero Curcuru, Federico Curbelo, Cesar Oviedo, Andres Brock and a host of others return to a team that reached the ‘AA’ semifinals.

Christ the King loses Andreas Brock, Peyton Atteloney and St. Francis Prep reaches CHSAA boys soccer final 11/5/11 - 09:02 PM
Despite all of the factors that seemed to be stacked against Christ the King, Royals coach Ovid Cusu believed that his team could overcome undefeated St. Francis Prep in the CHSAA Class AA Intersectional semifinals on Friday at St. John’s University.
True, the Royals lost twice to the Terriers during the regular season and were playing in the “AA” playoffs for the first time since moving up from Class A last year. Still, Cusu told his players, the playoffs are grounds for a new beginning.
For most of the first half, Cusu’s faith seemed to be well founded, but that’s when fate decided otherwise. Christ the King lost sophomore Andreas Brock to a neck injury in the 21st minute; in the 31st minute, senior midfielder Peyton Atteloney went down with an injured ankle.

Brock party: CK stuns Iona in CHSAA quarters 11/2/11 - 08:29 AM
Goal!
He is the architect of the soccer renaissance at Christ the King, the biggest reason why the Royals went from run of the mill CHSAA Class A squad to a budding powerhouse in Class AA.
But when the Royals stepped on the field for the resumption of their suspended intersectional quarterfinal against defending champion Iona Prep Tuesday morning at Maritime College, they did so without Ovid Cusu.
The Christ the King coach couldn’t get away from his day job at IS 93 in Ridgewood, where he’s a math teacher, causing some trepidation from his players.

"Dream" fulfilled: CK makes first AA semis in recent memory 11/2/11 - 08:26 AM
Andreas Brock
Christ the King took the Grand Central Parkway in Queens on Tuesday morning en route to SUNY Maritime. On the way, the Royals passed by St. John’s University, the site of the CHSAA Class AA intersectional semifinals.
“We said, ‘Guys that’s the dream right there,’” senior midfielder Peyton Atteloney said. “Now we finally made our dream.”
In an odd resumed game, Christ the King knocked off Iona Prep, 1-0, in 40 minutes of play in the quarterfinals to earn its first semifinals berth at the highest level in recent memory. CK (9-5-3) moved up to the ‘AA’ last season and lost to Iona, 1-0 in overtime, in last year’s final eight.

CK vs Stepinac 10/27/11 - 09:42 AM
John Nunez
According to Christ the King coach Ovid Cusu, Stepinac is “a big, fast, and tough team with tremendous goalie play.”
His team wasn’t too intimidated by his pre-game speech.
Christ the King twice scored two goals within 60 seconds of one another, as a relentless offense and an unmatched aggressive style of play propelled the Royals past Stepinac and into the quarterfinals with a 4-2 victory in the first round of the CHSAA Class AA intersectional boys soccer playoffs Wednesday at Juniper Valley Park.
Freshman star-in-the-making John Nunez got the scoring started in the 37th minute with a poke into the back left corner of the net off a cross from Calogero Curcuru. Just more than 40 seconds later, early in the 38th minute, it was Nunez again with a header into the top left corner of the net, assisted by Federico Curbelo’s cross.

Fearless Nunez paces CK over Stepinac 10/27/11 - 09:37 AM
Nunez and Atteloney
John Nunez looks and acts like a typical 14-year old freshman. That is, until he steps on the soccer pitch.
“He has no fear,” Christ the King coach Ovid Cusu said. “The kid doesn’t care he’s a freshman. He goes in and gives the best he can and he wants to learn.”
That was on display in a CHSAA Class AA intersectional first round playoff match against Stepinac Wednesday as Nunez struck for a pair of critical first-half goals to lead Christ the King to a 4-2 win against Archbishop Stepinac at Juniper Valley Park.

CTK vs. Fordham Prep. 0:0 10/21/11 - 11:23 AM
Sebastian Morales
Even though Fordham Prep entered Thursday match in second place in the CHSAA Archdiocesan division, Christ the King coach Ovid Cusu believed his team could match up with one of the best teams in the city.
"We haven't been outplayed once all season," Cusu said. "We respond to pressure well, we play hard, and we are going to play them hard."
Just two days after Fordham Prep netted an impressive six goals in a victory over Xavier, the Rams were shutout by a combination of a tough Christ the King defense, solid play by keeper Christian Nolasco and a stiff wind Thursday at Juniper Valley Park in Queens. The CHSAA Class AA intersectional boys soccer game, as a result, ended in a scoreless draw.

A stronger Junior Varsity is ready for CHSAA 9/4/11 - 07:41 PM
After two weeks of hard work the boys JV soccer team traveled to St. Marys High School in Manhasset to play their first offical scrimmage.
The Royals won 11:0 with John Nunez, Andy Munoz, and Darius Sobers each scoring more than one goal. The JV team is lead by the goalkeeper Marko Urosevic, with very strong defense consisted of Bartek Tarnacki, Jordan Green, Chris Cabrerra, and Chrisitan Vera. The midfield line is very fast and creative having John Nunez, Darius Sobers, and Andy Munoz controlling the pace of the game. Lots of goals are expected from the forwards Charle Spina, Vojtek Bednara, Joseph Carpino, and Mark Oddo while others are waiting for their chance of the bench. The Royals are proud to announce a new JV coach Ron Singh who joined the program from the BW Gottschee organization. Ron will help Frank Hanz coach the Junior Varsity Team.

No. 10 Christ the King 8/29/11 - 11:16 PM
Pre-Season Practice
by Dylan Butler - MSG Varsity
A year ago, more than a few people in the CHSAA thought Ovid Cusu was crazy.
He was moving a talented, but young and inexperienced Christ the King squad up from Class B to Class A, asking his kids to play against perennial powerhouses like St. Francis Prep and Archbishop Molloy.
“Most of us last year thought we were going to win one or two games,” senior defender John Favara said. “But we surprised ourselves and worked our butts off to do everything.”
The end result surprised many, including those inside of Christ the King. The Royals were 7-10 during the regular season and reached the intersectional quarterfinals where they lost in overtime to eventual champion Iona Prep.
While the defeat was a bitter pill to swallow, it showed how far Christ the King had come in its first year in Class A.
So what do the Royals do for an encore?
“We’re no longer the new kid on the block,” Cusu said. “There’s no surprises, that’s why they have to keep the intensity. It doesn’t matter who we play.”
Cusu’s goals have been raised for this year’s Royals. A year ago, he was happy to be competitive. Now, it’s about a winning season and a berth in the Class A semifinals.
“We want to get to St. John’s,” midfielder Federico Curbelo said, referring to the site of the Class A final four.
Cusu has good reason to believe that’s a possibility this year. Virtually everyone is back from last year’s squad, including starting goalkeeper Chris Nolasco, defenders Favara and Chris Morales, Federico, Calogero Curcuru and Peyton Atteloney in the stacked midfield and Cesar Oviedo up front.
They join a few talented players making the jump up from junior varsity, including midfielder Michael Ortiz, and a handful of freshmen vying for a spot on the varsity.
“Last year, every win was a championship,” Cusu said. “This year there’s pressure, there’s expectations that we’re going to do better. We can’t run from the fact we have talented players, but talent doesn’t win games. You have to be motivated, work hard, approach every game with the same intensity.”
More importantly, Curcuru said, the culture has changed around the program, which should be strong in the years to come with an influx of high-level freshmen in the Middle Village school.
“We have to work twice as hard now because everyone knows about us,” Curcuru said. “We have to have bigger expectations.”
Along those lines, there is no longer an intimidation factor when it comes to playing St. Francis Prep and Archbishop Molloy. Sure, the Royals are still searching for their first win against their Queens rivals, but the gap, they say, isn’t what it once was.
“We’re looking forward to those games this year because we want to prove we can beat them,” Curbelo said.
“Throughout practice we talk about St. Francis Prep and Molloy and I think they’re still the bigger guns because of the history,” Cusu said. “However, every game we’re approaching with the same idea and that’s to score the extra goal. I’m not going to be mysterious. We’re going to play very attacking soccer.”

FEDERICO CURBELO
Junior midfielder, Christ the King
Curbelo wasn’t intimidated by his new surroundings in CHSAA Class A. He had 10 goals and five assists, helping the Royals to a respectable 7-10-0 record, good for third behind perennial city powerhouses St. Francis Prep and Archbishop Molloy in Brooklyn/Queens.
PEYTON ATTELONEY
Senior midfielder, Christ the King
He made a huge impact right away for the Royals last year, setting up Calogero Curcuru for what proved to be the game-winner in a 3-1 victory against Holy Cross for CK’s first Class A win. Equally dangerous in and around the 18-yard box, Atteloney is a key returnee for the Royals.

Royal expectations for up-and-coming Christ the King 8/25/11 - 10:06 AM
Last year Team
By MARC RAIMONDI
Last Updated: 12:04 AM, August 25, 2011
Posted: 12:02 AM, August 25, 2011
Christ the King boys soccer is entering just its second season in CHSAA Class AA, yet Ovid Cusu has lofty goals. With very little roster turnover, the coach expects the Royals to finish with a winning record and advance all the way to the semifinals.
“It’s the same team, so it has to be better this year,” Cusu said. “I’m not saying we have to win the city and the state. That wouldn’t be fair.”
Cusu, last year’s New York Post All-Queens boys soccer Coach of the Year, believes his expectations are realistic. And with the amount of talent coming back, there are probably few who would argue with him.
Christ the King will again be led by crafty attacking midfielder Federico Curbelo, who scored 10 goals in 2010 and was named All-City honorable mention by The Post. Cusu expects even more now from his blue-chip talent who plays academy ball with the New York Cosmos.
“I’ve never coached or seen a player that has the brain, the creativity, the vision,” Cusu said. “He reads things so well. He can do everything. He’s like the whole package.”
It’s not just Curbelo, either. Senior midfielder Peyton Atteloney is a versatile, speedy playmaker and sophomore Chris Nolasco already has a year under his belt in goal. Both also play for the New York Cosmos. Anchoring the backline will be senior John Favara and junior midfielder Calogero Curcuru scored twice in an upset victory over Regis in the playoffs.
Christ the King finished 7-10-0 last year and advanced to the quarterfinals, where it took eventual champion Iona Prep to overtime before falling, 1-0. The Royals were a middling lower-level program for years before Cusu took over.
He sees this as just the start. More than 40 players were at tryouts this week and only three of them were seniors.
“It’s the next sport to basketball now,” Cusu said. “The future is there. We’ll see.”
The future begins in 2011. Pieces are in place for a deep run and that isn’t just a hope, it’s the goal. The time for getting its feet wet in the ‘AA’ is long over for Christ the King.
“The first year was no pressure,” Cusu said. “You win a game, you won a championship. Now everyone has expectations.”
Especially him.

All-Queens Coach of the Year: Ovid Cusu, Christ the King
It was a bold decision, one questioned by many other CHSAA coaches. Ovid Cusu was moving Christ the King up to Class A and it was believed the Royals would struggle. But Cusu had his extremely young team believing from the first practice that they could surprise the league and quiet the naysayers.
Christ the King did that and more, finishing a respectable 7-10-0 and third place in Brooklyn/Queens, ahead of established programs Holy Cross and Xaverian. The Royals even reached the Class A quarterfinals, losing to eventual champion Iona Prep in overtime. Now, Christ the King is on the soccer map and its thanks to Cus

6. Christ the King (7-10-0) (7)
Is there a better story in the CHSAA this season than Christ the King? We don’t think so. In their first season with the big boys, the Royals finished third in Brooklyn/Queens, thrashed Regis in the first round and played the defending state champions from Iona Prep even through 87 minutes before a defensive miscue led to an overtime winner by standout Cesar Ceja. Christ the King surprised everyone this year. With three freshmen and three sophomores on their roster, what will the Royals do for an encore?

Christ the King Passes Another Soccer Test 10/12/10 - 06:45 AM
For Peyton Atteloney, every time the Christ the King boys soccer team steps on the field, it’s a test.
“We want to prove to all these ‘A’ division teams that we’re here to stay,” Atteloney said.
Monday afternoon’s exam drew mixed results – a solid first half followed by a subpar second half. But the Royals passed, in part, because Atteloney scored as the junior helped lead Christ the King to a 2-1 victory against Archbishop Stepinac at Juniper Valley Park in Middle Village, Queens.
Freshman Cesar Oviedo added the second goal and Federico Curbelo had two assists as the Royals, ranked No. 6 in the CHSAA by The Post, have far surpassed coach Ovid Cusu’s preseason expectations.

Federico Curbelo struck for his second goal of the season and Anthony Pipitone added another for No. 8 Christ the King (2-3-0), which went into the half with a 2-0 lead. Monsignor Farrell (0-4-1) cut its deficit in half on a penalty kick by Frankie Palazzo, his second of the season, but the Royals held on for the key road victory.

Christ the King rises to CHSAA Top Division in Soccer 6/30/10 - 01:19 PM
With all 11 of his starters back and a solid crop of incoming freshmen, Christ the King coach Ovid Cusu was sure his team would not only compete for the CHSAA Class B boys soccer crown, but be the favorite to win it.
“But then again, so what?” he asked. “Let’s say you win the ‘B’, what happens next? Players don’t come when you’re a ‘B’ division team. In order to have a strong program, you have to be able to compete at the highest level.”
And that’s what Cusu has decided to do. With enough players to be able to field a junior varsity team, Christ the King will make the jump to the Class A league this fall.

Fellow freshman John Favara opened the scoring for Christ the King (1-0-1) early in the first half, but McClancy (1-1-0) equalized in the final minute of a dominating first half on a goal by Jeremy Alissandrdos.
Anthony Ciorciari headed in a corner kick in the 47th minute as the Royals regained the lead, but two minutes later the Crusaders tied the game again when Alexis Escobar found the back of the net. The Royals earned the tiebreaker with a win at Bishop Ford last week, while the Crusaders lost their game at St. John’s Prep.
Both teams started the game on a slow pace. The Royals took the lead late in the first half on a shot by Dominick Cinquemani. The second half started with the Crusaders changing to a more attacking formation. The Royals defense was defending well and on the attack, Cinquemani scored his second goal for a 2-0 lead.
The third goal for the Royals was scored from a header by Nick Viaggio. In the last minute of the game the Crusaders scored their only goal of the match.
With the 3-1 win, the Royals became the new Brooklyn/Queens Varsity B Champions.
Cinquemani is a candidate for the Most Valuable Player in the B division. In 10 games,he has 15 goals and 2 assists.
The Christ the King Royals will open the City B playoffs on Thursday, Nov. 1 (today) at Juniper Valley Park. The playoff games will start at 3 p.m.
“It is a great feeling to walk away from this field with a very happy team,” said CTK Coach Ovid Cusu. “These boys are winners and I know that whatever they decide to do in their careers they will work hard and be successful. Now we are getting ready for the City B playoffs. Thank God that no player is hurt.”

Christ the King and St. John’s Prep played to a 1-1 draw in a CHSAA ‘B’ boys’ soccer match Wednesday afternoon at Con Edison Field in Astoria.
Christ the King (2-0-2) took a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute when the Red Storm was victimized by an own goal. The Royals squandered a bevy of scoring opportunities and it came back to haunt them when Robert Acosta set up Robert Granauer for the equalizer in the 61st minute.
“It was one of those days that the ball does not want to go in,” Christ the King junior Adam Baran said. “We took so many shots on the net and nothing. Their goalie was their best player. Luckily (for us), they scored an own goal.”
Christ the King heads to East Elmhurst to take on division-leading Monsignor McClancy, while St. John’s Prep (1-1-1) hosts Bishop Ford. Both games are Friday at 4 p.m.
